This’ll be quick.
I’ve never really liked the Happy Mondays and listening to this again hasn’t really changed my opinion. Maybe it’s due to living in Manchester and the massive over-exposure they’ve always had here, or maybe it’s down to the fact that the band’s sound is made up of a drunk addict rambling and shouting over a style of music that’s never appealed to me. I’ve just never understood why Shaun Ryder’s held up as a godlike figure among Manchester music fans – his voice is rotten and his lyrics aren’t that special either. Granted, there are some gems in there (“Son, I’m thirty, I only went with your mother cos she’s dirty”) but much of the rest resembles the mumblings of a madman.
“Step On” is a proper tune though.
